What soundcards?  And what software (and versions) are you using to host it in Windows, and the same info for Linux please.  I'm interested in trying to figure out if it's the host's fault (or hardware), or if something with the way the DSP is functioning could be different, and if it actually is different.

In windows xp with M audio 2496 soundcard Im using winamp 5.541 with DSP stacker v1.6 running shoutcast source and SS2.Am using Jaspers linein plugin v1.80 to take the input from the following box-
Linux hardy box running IDJC with the inbuilt sound.
All presets clip with this setup.

On my third box I have Hardy with another M audio 2496.I use Wine 1.0.1 to run Winamp 5.541 with SS2.
I can use any preset and have no clipping.I can even set them quite a bit louder and still clipping free.
I tried the latest Linux Intrepid but it clips.Theres something about Hardy Grin

Hey...hello...you guys got me thinking & thinkering. Thank's for the 2 plus days of no sleep!!!. I got 2 old door-stops (not desk-tops)  running SS 1.3 thru Wine (the Colonel Mighty Intaller did the .exe trick). Dell gx260 mid P4, 2.4 Ghz?. 1/2 gig of DDR ram. Integrated audio & video (=99% crap-cards). Latest Ubuntu, Wine, Winamp & SS 1.3. The other one is a > interesting puppy. It used to be a (of all thing's!!) a mini ATX Compaq speed-bump w/ it's respective (despective!!!) one time & only original BIOS. Intel m/board with mid P3 1.113333...Ghz, 0.5 gig of PC 133 ram. HP something mini ATX case w/ original 110 watt power supply (not the input volts...out-put supply!!!). CD/DVD ROM & CD/DVD RW. USB 2 w/firewire ports & a network card. Turtule Beach Riviera audio card with in-out optical SPDIF & a Jaton (n-vidia) 128 megs 8x AGP video card. None of this should haved worked on Ubuntu Studio 8.04, Wine 1.1, Winamp 5.??...just dowloaded & SS 1.3; but it does...the other one...well, it's a P4 w/ DDR's & even has an ISA to PCI bridge!!!. Heck...I'm ready to go back to the past!!!. A lot more few things. Fast 8.2k RPM Hard Drives really helps. Ubuntu Studio 8.1 is not truly ready yet. It helps if you up-date Ubuntu Studio 8.04 with the ISO DVD in your PC's (it gives the up-date some "hints" on what to replace). If you disable the spectrum or the o-scope display on Winamp, your CPU resource usage woun't be 333%. With a little modification of the default SS 1.3 setting booth sound very good to play CD's thru my "not so much" of a micro-fm (Blonder-Tongue ZFMSM CATV FM modulator & CATV amps, really!!!). The Winamps features like the EQ & the www url or the Line-In 1.8 don't work ? because of the Wine's sub-rutine short commings, but @ least the playlist stores. The P3 can't have more ram, the P4 tops @ 2 gigs & Intrepid seems the better choice to try on another newer "door-stop" PC. Ubuntu Studio is still a bit funky but @ least it has'nt crashed since I started to write "xi-ol" this report...long report. See y'all latter...Mr. Xang.

BUT NO UP-STREAM...well...maybe sometime later...anybody else messing with Ubuntu?...the Desktop & Server editions also work fine..."xiao"...Mr. Xang.

To Dj Sevy: I generally setup SS very easy specially when using it thru Wine. Then It goes thru a Behringer DEQ-2496 (optical or analog input) & another Behringer SX-3040 (to mixer, monitor spkrs or FM modulator). It takes a lot of processor power when you emulate Windows, the crude Explorer (Exploiter!!!), Winamp, other plug-ins & on top of that S. Solution thru Wine. In a UNIX derivative: LINUX. On a version of LINUX: Ubuntu, & in my case; a version of Ubuntu: Ubuntu Studio. Lot's-o-little squirrels running nuts inside the my Ubuntu Studio!!!...so I think that you need to hire more squirrels, feed them more ram, or hire an external sub-contractor like a USB/Firewire HD/audio interface or complementary analog/DSP audio help. In all of my PC"s I try to have the maximum allowed memory & the fastest HD's (7.2k RPM's & up HD's, since those 2 items are the bottle-necks), On one of my 4 Pc's I had to replace an EMU 1212 'cause Ubu.'s & jackit/sourceforge drvrs did'nt work & instead  I had to use an old Creative Live Drive IR. It's a garage build Athlon 3.7k with a hell of a Foxconn dual bus m/board. No distortion. The most recent one is a Dell Dimension 4.7kc with an Intel HT & integral sound card since I can't find one that fits in a short form factor case. Again...no distortion, but I have'nt setup anything yet but the default setting that came with the SS 1.3. A Dell GX-260 with integral sound & Ubu. Studio 8.1 on an external USB H D; it works, sounds great & it can boot-up to Win. XP on the main HD. The really funky one is a mix-o-crap P III Compaq Bios that I was able to soup-up to 1.4 Ghz. Tops @ 500 megs of PC 133 ram & it has a Turtle Beach sound card & even the optical SPDIF works. Can you belive is running 1 DVD player & 1 DVD burner, 2 HD's, network & USB II cards, an extra fan that don't need & a 128 meg n-videa AGPx8 video card... with a 120 watts power supply!!!. It does have Ubu. Studio 8.04 (updated) & as a matter of fact I'm writhing you this reply while listening to Live365 thru it. I imagine that if I try push more out of the little squirrels, it'll frezze like a bag of ice in the Anthartic. Somehow Winamp & SS 1.3 sounds ok with CD's or the native Linux player of Live365, but no www goes thru Wine; & that is something to wine about...on the better 2 PC's Line-In 1.8 works & the www goes in thru Wine, Winamp, Thompson's MP3 Pro & SS 1.3, but NO UP-STREAM. Maybe with an I 7 quad core or an audio server, fiber-channel or fiber-to-premises, ISDN, T1 DSL or lot's of more $...but then in that case it might be worth to pay the fees to the Windows cossa nostra & still have something +/- cheap "made in the garage". Hum...? with a good external USB audio card & a core 2 duo or an 8 core & a...well...I'll keep "xhiu 'all" posted...Mr Xang.

to DJ Sevy (& SS forum): I'm having a blast w/ Ubuntu Studio 8.1...Kubuntu, the Desktop, the Server...but it's not without problems. Your bios, HD's & IDE cables have to be just right. N-videa restricted driver issues. Weak documentation. Funky RAID implementation...it's like teaching your kid how to behave correctly. One of the PC's that I was able to get Line-In 1.8 thru is a modified Dell Dimension 4700c, Intel LG775 HT (a little furnace but I added 9 more fans), 2gig DDR2, 256 megs ATI PCIe video (epoxied) & native sound card. Sata HD with Windows XP Pro & originally was a dedicated machine for MS Flight Simulator 2k2,2k4 FSX & Flight Gear sftwr apps. A few months ago I added Winamp,Thompson MP3 Pro, Line-In 1.8 & of course...Sound Solution; since it has an optical SPDIF output & it does sound good enough for my "micro-FM". Ubuntu Studio 8.1 is @ an external USB PATA HD that is accessible thru the F12 button boot-up choice @ the bios start. A few pointers about Ubuntu. 0.75 of the time it does not work if you try to burn a downloaded ISO image CD/DVD thru a Windows/Apple PC. I guess they don't like an OS with an African name & I bet they did'nt vote for Obama either. Donate say...20 bucks & order a CD/DVD. Once you have a PC with it you can download & burn whatever Ubu's OS you want (but please do give "Ubu." some $. It's an effective & worthy cause; plus it'll help to make the OS/.org  better & augment the open source community...like this forum). PII's/PIII's, some AMD's/VIA & some peripherals have issues. Odd, old stuff...well...it's that...& it does'nt help either when the "big boys" play stingy. So good luck with what you've got. Finally....here we go...on that Dell/Ubuntu Studio 8.1: system/preferences/sound/devices/sound event/sound playback=PulseAudio sound server. Same box. Music & movies...=Autodetect. Audio Conferencing/sound playb...=Autodetect/sound capture=PulseAudio sound server. Default mixer tracks/device/playback=Alsa PCM on front:0(Intel ICH6) via DMA (PulseAudio...). DMA & the  Pulse server "make thing's happen".  Wine/configure Wine/applications/default=Win.XP. Add explorer.exe,  winamp.exe,  winampa.exe & all thru Win. XP. In my case...Audio=EsounD Driver/Emulate & the spec's should be the normal 44100/16 etc. Very important is to have the Wine desktop integrated (linked) to the Ubuntu desktop/home, so do it. I installed the latest Winamp (?'s d ver.'s #'s?), Line-in 1.8 & SS 1.3 (thru "the colonel mighty installer"); opening them with the "Wine Programs", but except to the default preset; the other 89 in "the colonel..." SS installer did'nt show up (? are they ?). Who care's, I can make my own. Winamp/plugins/preferences/output/nullsoft wave output/configure/device=Wine wave out mapper. Same page. Nullsoft DirectSound output/configure/device=(my case)01:Primary Sound Driver. The rest I left intact. Input/Line-in 1.8/configure/add preset/device name=EsoundD Wave Driver. Add location Wizard/the title...=esound (my case). Next. You all know this...44100/2/16. Device to use=Wine Wave In Mapper. Next. At the "option list" I added my device or dev=0 & the whole paragraph looks like this: title=esound,srate=44100,bps=16,nch=2,dev=0 & yes...need to add...COMA dev=0 after nch=2. Clicked Create Preset/The name of...=esound (again...my case), then Finish, OK on the Line-In setup page & closed the Winamp Preferences page. Now is time to start bitting your nails...drum roll...press play @ the Winamp skin...well... I hope it work's for you...it does in this particular case but the set-up is a bit different in one of my Lap-Tops (HD w/Ubu. Studio 8.1 + external USB sound card); & in another desktop (AMD single core/dual bus. Old Creative Live! Drive IR & external USB HD w/ Ubu. Studio 8.1). The AMD PC has Windows XP Pro on the main 2 HD's w/all kinds of multimedia suites (Pinnacle,Vegas Video,Reason,Sonar...of course... Sound Solution). It's too bad the EMU 1212 I had in there don't have Ubuntu drivers for it...@ least not yet. One time I stopped @ EMU's headquarters on the way to the Monterrey Aquarium & told them how good their gear sounded (also bought 2 t-shirts). Next time...your ASIO sucks...why not in Ubuntu...why it crashed with Windows Service Pack 3...throw in a stink bomb in the air intake of the AC unit...well enough...get Ubuntu Studio going since it's like having an Apple that you can really configure (Mc-I-won't-touch!!!, it's too damm easy), get sftwr, mess with it, get frustrated with it...& all for almost free!!!. The quad core PC...in the works. See "chiu-al"...ah...ah...ah...does this long discourse answers you question DJ Sevy?...later...Mr. Xang.

Dj Sevy: By the time your anti-everything runs out, it might be to late. The latest virulence has claimed the HD's of 15 million PC's. That's the # of PC's known infected...& the ones that are but not aware they are?. With the new MS server this super-virus came to live hatched thru their own OS-hole. Does MS knows that the race between the consumer updating (or willing to play monopoly with them) & the hacker, is always won by the later?. My girlfriend's lap-top went nuts after the recommended XP Service Pack 3 & even after the backup I still had to re-format 'cause it left the registry unusable & left a bunch of crap in other places too. So the 6+ hours I spend rebuilding this PC falls into their EULA techno-legalize terms of user hell?. Now that the 2 major OS mafias have come to a development standstill, 1 comes with an eye candy & the other 1 with a phone...hey...it's the latest thing!!!. It's not that they don't make great products, it's the way they go about it that I find despicable & when their "great" products fails it should be their responsibility & not hide behind some "license agreement" that leaves the paying consumer with no rights. Fortunately there's Linux & for us fortunate that can have fun with it...what can I tell you?...that PulseAudio do streams up...no malware...SS works thru Wine...free software...free!!!. It might not be fancy. It might not always work. It might be hard to understand. But @ least I'm free to try it & not be tied, lied & laid. Mr. Xang

I tried a fresh install of Ubuntu Intrepid and have linein working fine with onboard sound Grin Grin I hope to have it running with a cheap soundblaster Roll Eyes I think pulseaudio is causing some problems (stuttery sound).Ive given up with my maudio card as I can only get it to work with oss and linein is a no go with that.
Ill run xp and get my moneys worth until this or next month, then Ill have a virus free, happy pc.

Dj Sevy: Glad you were able to get Line-In going. I reconfigured the "door-stop" PIII PC with a Sound Blaster 5.1 Live Drive IR that has a front panel interface & it was a matter of finding the EMU drivers in the Synaptic Package Manager (ld10k1); & it's EMU drvrs 'cause Creative bought them a while ago (sad thing indeed!!!). But everything works now. SPDIF, mike/line/instrument inputs, Wine 1.0/Winamp/Line-In/Sound Solution 1.3, headphone, MIDI & even the IR remote control. I guess since it's a semi-obsolete piece of gear the gods @ Creative were not afraid of releasing drivers for it in Linux. Look if the Envy 24 drivers are the ones needed in your sound card (Add/Remove Applications & Synaptic Package Manager), or see if in the ALSA web site they have either drivers or guidance on how to get your M-Audio card working. Or maybe your "se-Creative" card will work with the driver "awesfx" in System/Administration/Synaptic Package.../Multimedia (universe) of Ubuntu Studio. I found that is very different for each sound card & PC to integrate or configure in Linux (Red Hat, Mandriva, etc), Ubuntu Desktop or Ubuntu Studio. Not to mention how arduous & convoluted the whole process can be since self induced pain is really not a pleasure...but it can have it's rewards (electronic sado-masochist or plain old engineering?). As for the Pulse Audio...I'm able to get the server to up-stream but I'm not 100% sure I did it right & also I'm afraid that if I back-track I'll mess up whatever I have achieved. Need more time to study the situation. I'm purposely using old "stuff" for testing because that's where you'll find the must trouble & a good way to learn from the basics. Sort of like learning tubes before txsistors, then integrated circuits & so forth. But not everyone has the time & patience to go the hard way. Keep trying "mai-fren"!!!. As they say in Spanish..."no hay peor fracaso que el no intentar" ("there's no worst failure than not trying"). Mr. Xang . Post Data Scriptum..."google-out" Kapersky Labs since they are the authority in all those "vices" that I believe MS brought on themselves. Tira por la puerta la manzana y la ventana!!!(throw out the door the apple & the window!!!). Again...Mr. Xang.

Im hoping JesseG's on the case finding out why as I have no idea

I'm still hoping that you are able to record the output difference - regular what you say is "clipping" and what you say is "not clipping".  Preferably with a preset that is known to have audible distortion when it is clipping. Smiley  Preferably with FLAC. Wink
