i'm formally requesting access to administrate this forum.  for starters, it's running outdated SMF software that needs to be updated or it'll get pwnt, the captcha isn't setup well on it and spammers are getting through, it's configured to send email to everyone every time a member joins (which CAN be disabled)...  and probably a lot of other things i could go into, but those are the glaring ones.

and i could easily fix them in under an hour.  and make sure the forum software is actually updated when a security fix comes out.

think about it.... dear admin sirs.  Smiley

p.s. whoever is deleting members that are spammers, don't do that.  what you should do is ban the C-Class subnet (ala 1.2.3.*) AND the username/email...  then go to the "delete user" function and ONLY remove all of the topics & posts.  DO NOT delete the member itself.  if you delete the member, it can't ban the username, plus whoever is doing it isn't actually deleting the messages either.  another thing deleting members prevents is the ability to track banned members across IPs, which are stored in the ban log and in the access logs that show what IPs a member has accessed the site from.

I'm for Jesse all the way on this. While I don't always post here, I'm always checking in for tips, updates and perhaps the opportunity to learn something I didn't know before. I appreciate (and rely on) Sound Solution so much, and it's a shame this forum isn't more active.

If this doesn't happen, I'd be all for starting an unofficial Sound Solution group on Yahoo.

(There isn't one already, is there?)

Or maybe a Google Groups group since you don't need a Google account to use them, and they are echoed on NNTP (newsgroup) servers too, in addition to email.

If the Google group can be moderated so that spammers can't get in, it's a good solution. I know that with Yahoo, you can restrict posts to members only, and you can moderate and delete spurious posts.

Either way, if you're up for it, let's do it!

Yes, it has very good spam detection for starters, and also allows you to moderate based on a few things (or just moderate everything), and options when handling the moderated messages like "allow all" from a particular poster.

All in all much less spammed than Yahoo far as I can tell with the Google Groups I have now.  There was maybe like half a dozen attempts at first, and now I haven't had any attempts in months.  Cool
